Roof Soft Washing

Stop the moss and save your roof. We safely eliminate black algae streaks and destructive moss using the industry-standard Soft Wash method recommended by shingle manufacturers.

Roof with black streaks
Gloeocapsa Magma

Those Black Streaks Are Alive.

Many homeowners on Martha's Vineyard think the dark stains on their roofs are just dirt or tree sap. They are actually a cyanobacteria called Gloeocapsa Magma.

This bacteria feeds on the limestone filler in your asphalt shingles. Over time, it holds moisture against the roof, leading to the growth of moss and lichen.

The Danger of Moss

When moss takes root, it grows under the shingles, lifting them up. In a heavy island storm, these lifted shingles can tear off, leading to expensive water damage inside your home.

ARMA Approved Method

Why We Never Pressure Wash Roofs

Using a pressure washer on a roof voids your warranty and strips the protective granules off the shingles. We use the Soft Wash method, the only cleaning method approved by the Asphalt Roofing Manufacturers Association (ARMA).

Landscape Protection

Step one is safety. We water all surrounding plants and bag downspouts to ensure no cleaning solution touches your landscaping.

Treatment Application

We apply a specialized algaecide at zero pressure. It kills the bacteria instantly and turns the moss white (dead).

The "Mother Nature" Rinse

For heavy moss, we let the treatment sit. The moss dies, dries up, and naturally flakes off with the wind and rain over the next few weeks, protecting the granule integrity.

The Vineyard Power Washing Difference

The "Other Guys"

  • Uses high pressure (blasts off granules)
  • Walks on the roof (cracks shingles)
  • Only removes surface dirt (bacteria grows back in months)

Our Method

  • No pressure (chemical application only)
  • Ladders only (we rarely walk on the roof)
  • 100% kill ratio (roof stays clean for 3-5 years)

Roof Cleaning FAQ

Will the moss come off immediately?

The black streaks will disappear instantly. However, thick moss and lichen will turn white (indicating it is dead) but will cling to the roof. We do not force it off, as that would tear the shingles. It will naturally weather off over the next few rain cycles.

Do you clean cedar roofs?

Yes. Cedar requires a specialized oil-based preservation approach after cleaning. We clean cedar roofs to remove rot-causing organisms and can discuss preservation options with you.

Is the runoff safe for my pets?

During the cleaning process, we keep pets inside. Once we are finished and have thoroughly diluted the area with fresh water, it is perfectly safe for pets to roam the yard.

Extend Your Roof's Lifespan

Replacing a roof on Martha's Vineyard is expensive. Cleaning it is a fraction of the cost.
